Paul KillerbyLocal Area Concept Plans – South Waikato District (2005/06-2007/08), initiated by South Waikato District Council. Abstract South Waikato District Council is initiating Local Area Concept Plans for urban centres over the period 2005/06-2007/08 with oversight by voluntary community-based committees. A Tirau Concept Planning Committee was formed in October 2005 to plan an integrated approach to addressing future issues in Tirau. An Arapuni Concept Plan Steering Group was formed in August 2006 in partnership with the Arapuni Residents Association. Additional community-based Steering Groups are scheduled to be initiated in 2007/08 to develop Concept Plans for Putaruru and Tokoroa. The purpose of the each Concept Plan is to capture the shared vision of the local community to assist Council and other stakeholders in the development of each town and the District as a whole. The process of developing a Concept Plan provides an avenue for citizens and organisations to engage with Council and other local representative groups. It also has the potential to pull community members together, fostering local leadership and community ownership.
