Rotorua District Council (2003/04) Computers in the Community - community development project.

Abstract

During the 2003/04 financial year Rotorua District Council undertook initial steps to increase the potential benefits of computers and the Internet for Rotorua communities. This included:

  • Initial leadership and support for the development of the Rotorua Community ICT Trust.

  • Scoping of options for Council involvement in increasing the accessibility and uptake of broadband in Rotorua communities.

  • Partnering with other agencies to develop an ICT Strategy for the Rotorua District. This will aim to address "digital divide" issues in Rotorua, as well as ways that businesses and groups generally can improve their use of computers and the Internet.

Subsequent to leaving Rotorua District Council I remained involved with the Rotorua Community ICT Trust on a voluntary basis, becoming a Trustee in 2004/05 and later filling the roles of Secretary (2005/06) and Chair (2006/07). The Trust is in the process of applying for Digital Strategy funding on behalf of a local partnership of key agencies, and has also initiated a Rotorua Community Website project.
